String Examples on YouTube

We have enjoyed watching these examples of string instruments in our music classes this week. (We will finish with strings next Tuesday, September 27th.)  Some of the kids asked for the links, so here you go.  I think you will enjoy watching them together.  Ms. J

Music Buddies, the Orchestra and Brass Insruments 9-17-16

We  have  two  fun  activities  going  on  in  5th  Grade  Music  right  now.

Recording and Sharing School Songs with our Music Buddies

Exploring Instruments of the Orchestra

Introducing the Orchestra and four instrument families

  • Strings
  • Woodwinds
  • Brass
  • Percussion

Exploring the Brass Instruments

  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • French Horn
  • Tuba

Coming Soon:  Exploring the String Instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass)

Here are two wonderful examples we found on YouTube:

Good Orchestra Example:  “Pirates of the Caribbean” (Auckland Symphony Orchestra)

Good Brass Example:  “Fanfare for the Common Man” (New York Philharmonic)

It might be fun to watch these short videos with your child, and see what they remember or know about the various instruments.  Which are most interesting to them?  Would they like the job of being the conductor??

Another fun shared activity would be to ask you child to sing one of the school songs for you.  I have included links to the words, so you can check how well they are doing!

If you have any experience and would like to volunteer to demonstrate any of these instruments, I guarantee you play better than I do!  But I am a risk-taker, so it's all good.

Please be sure to contact me with any concerns, questions or suggestions you have!

Welcome to 5th Grade Music!

Greetings, new and returning families.  I am looking forward to getting reacquainted with returning fIFTH grade students and meeting a few new ones beginning the week of August 22-26. Third grade music classes will meet weekly at the following times:

  • Mondays from 9:05-9:50 with Ms. Homer's Class
  • Mondays from 10:05-10:50 with Ms. Esquibel's Class
  • Wednesdays 10:05-10:50 with Mr. Slattery's Class

Our first day of Music Class we will take pictures for new seating charts to help Ms. J with names. We also learned a new "Name Game" song to use for each student.  Each 5th Grade class will be partnered with a younger grade class, and we are working on videotaping "The Star Spangled Banner" and "The Bulldog Boogie" to help our Classroom Buddies learn these important school songs.

Fourth grade students are invited to audition for our after school choir, Vista Voices, which meets on Wednesdays from 2:45-4:30.  More information is posted here.  Also, we are looking for some helpful and willing parents to assist during our Wednesday after school rehearsals.  This is an important but fun job--and you are welcome to participate in our music activities, if you like.

You are always welcome to leave me a question or comment at my email: or on my school phone:  (760) 726-2170 Ext. 44316.
