4th Grade Recorders

Our 4th grade students have begun playing recorders in music class. We are beginning by reviewing the notes B-A-G and learning to read music notation on the treble staff. Be sure to ask your musician what words they know in Italian!

It is my hope that every student will be able to purchase a recorder for home practice. They are now available in the Student Store (open on Thursdays during lunch) for students to purchase for $5.

Here are two current songs we are working on:

Our goal is to have students learn to read music, learn good musicianship and habits, and play musically. The recorder is a great beginning instrument for this, and if and when our students graduate to a more advanced instrument, they will have a good foundation.

Here is a fun video to review the dynamics in music:

4th Grade Music from September

September is coming to a close, and here are some music things we have learned this past month.

  • We have experienced playing in a drumline with the song Quadraboom.

  • Students are learning to read and perform rhythms from our website, MusicPlayOnline.  Ask them what the game of “Poison” is--they are pretty good at it.

  • We have begun to play recorder again, learning how music works. We are reviewing the easier notes so far: B-A-G, but using those notes to help understand how to read and perform music using standard music notation.  These are skills that will really help our students if they choose to learn an instrument or join choir in middle school.

  • Recorders are available for purchase in the Student Store for $5.  I strongly recommend every student have a recorder at home for additional practice.

  • We are also learning a song from South Africa--Bambelela/Never Give Up.  Here is a nice recording of the song.

4th Grade Music--Learning Dynamics & Rhythm Reading

Our 4th grade classes have been participating in some drumming activities, reviewing how to read basic rhythm notation, and learning about dynamics in music.

Here is a fun video to review “Crescendo” and “Decrescendo” as well as Forte (Loud) and Piano (Soft). It is published by Music K8/Music Plank Publishing.

Our dynamic vocabulary includes:

Fortissimo (Very Loud)
Forte (Loud)
Mezzo Forte (Medium Loud)
Mezzo Piano (Medium Soft)
Piano (Soft)
Pianissimo (Very Soft)
Crescendo (Getting Gradually Louder)
Descrendo (Getting Gradually Softer)

On the website www.MusicPlayOnline.com there are some fun interactive games for helping students to read and perform rhythms. It would be great if you can try this out with your musician at home. (You can email me at cynthiajorstad@vistausd.org to get the User Name and Password).

Music Fun for Students at Home

Families…

Here is an exciting resource for Vista Academy students. This interactive music website was created by Denise Gagne, a marvelous preschool and elementary music educator in Canada. I was fortunate to attend a wonderful workshop she presented with Artie Almeida this summer in Washington, DC. Included with the workshop fee was a year’s subscription to this website for me and all of my students. Hoping you find time to review it with our musicians.

You will need the username and password. I am sending this home on a flyer for all students during the week of September 19-23, 2018. You can also email me for this info at cynthiajorstad@vistausd.org. We have permission to use it for our students, but not to post it on social media.

Familias ...
